We start our term in 6th grade art with a discussion about the culture of Oaxaca, Mexico. These people are known for their weaving skills and their brightly patterned hand-made animals. We create weavings using single tabby, double tabby, and interweaving. We form our animals out of clay. After they have been fired, we paint them with brightly colored patterns. Next, we learn about the Impressionistic artist, Mary Cassatt, and draw our self-portraits in proportion using a mirror as our guide. Finally, we discover the stained glass artist, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and create our own stained glass using the scratch art technique.
